IRS Notice CP503 – What It Means and Why You Shouldn’t Ignore It

A magnifying glass is on top of a stack of irs notices

If you’ve received IRS Notice CP503, the clock is ticking.

This is the IRS’s third collection notice, and it's one of the last warnings before they begin more aggressive actions — like filing tax liens, seizing refunds, or issuing levy threats.

Summit Tax Relief helps Oklahoma taxpayers stop this notice chain before it becomes a full-blown collections case.

What Is IRS Notice CP503?

IRS Notice CP503 is titled:

“Second Request – Balance Due.”

But don’t be fooled — it’s actually the third letter in the IRS’s sequence (after CP14 and CP501), and it carries more urgency than it sounds.

The CP503 is sent when:

  • You received a CP14 and CP501 but didn’t respond
  • Your balance is still unpaid
  • No payment plan or resolution has been made

This notice outlines:

  • Your unpaid balance with updated penalties and interest
  • A specific response deadline
  • A final reminder before enforcement begins

What Happens If You Ignore CP503?

The next step is often CP504, which is the IRS’s final notice before levy. If you continue to ignore your balance:

  • The IRS may file a Notice of Federal Tax Lien
  • Your state tax refund could be seized
  • A levy notice (LT11 or 1058) could be issued within weeks
  • Interest and penalties continue to grow
  • The IRS may assign your case to Automated Collections or a Revenue Officer
CP503 is your last low-pressure warning before enforcement tools are triggered.
