IRS Wage Garnishment in Oklahoma – What You Need to Know Now

A wooden box that says financial peace of mind on it

If the IRS is garnishing your paycheck — or has warned you they’re about to — it’s time to act fast. An IRS wage garnishment doesn’t require court approval, and the IRS doesn’t stop until they’re paid or you fight back.

At Summit Tax Relief, we help Oklahoma clients stop IRS wage garnishments in as little as 24 hours, using proven strategies that protect your income and resolve the underlying tax debt.

Here’s what you need to know.

What Is IRS Wage Garnishment?

A wage garnishment is when the IRS takes a portion of your paycheck before it even hits your bank account. They send a legal order (Form 668-W) to your employer, who is required by law to withhold part of your pay and send it to the IRS.

It’s a form of levy — and one of the most aggressive collection tools the IRS uses.

What Triggers a Garnishment?

  • You owe unpaid back taxes
  • You ignored or didn’t respond to IRS notices (CP14, CP504, LT11, 1058)
  • You did not request a Collection Due Process (CDP) hearing
  • You failed to enter into an agreement or submit financial disclosure (Form 433-A)

Once these steps are skipped or ignored, the IRS is legally allowed to seize part of your wages every pay period.

How Much Can the IRS Garnish in Oklahoma?

The IRS doesn’t use a percentage — they use an exemption table based on:

  • Your filing status
  • The number of exemptions claimed
  • Your pay frequency (weekly, biweekly, monthly, etc.)

Everything above the exempt amount is garnished — which means:

  • You could lose 50–75% of your paycheck
  • Your employer is required to comply
  • The garnishment continues every pay period until resolved
Even minimum-wage earners can be garnished if they’ve ignored IRS notices.

How to Stop IRS Wage Garnishment

At Summit Tax Relief, we stop garnishments using multiple tools — often within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the case.

1. File a Power of Attorney (POA)

We immediately take over all communication with the IRS and your employer.

2. Request a Collection Hold

We get the IRS to temporarily stop the garnishment while we prepare your resolution.

3. Submit Financials (Form 433-A/F)

We show why the garnishment is causing economic hardship and propose a viable alternative.

4. Negotiate a Resolution

We may propose:

  • Installment Agreement
  • Currently Not Collectible (CNC)
  • Offer in Compromise
  • Or an Appeal, if your rights were violated

Oklahoma-Specific Examples

Case 1 – CNC Relief in Oklahoma City

A school district employee owed $38,000. The IRS began garnishing her check, taking $890 every two weeks. Within 48 hours of filing POA and 433-A, we secured CNC status and stopped the garnishment completely.

Case 2 – Installment Agreement in Tulsa

A truck driver earning $1,200/week was being garnished $600. We submitted a resolution package and replaced the garnishment with a manageable $250/month payment plan.

What If You Already Got IRS Form 668-W?

IRS Form 668-W is the garnishment order. If your employer received it:

  • You may only have 1–2 pay periods before money is withheld
  • The IRS does not need to send further warnings
  • You still have rights — but time is limited

The faster we file a resolution, the greater the chance we can stop or reverse garnishment.
