IRS Levy vs. IRS Lien – What Oklahoma Taxpayers Need to Know

A pen sits on a piece of paper that says irs levy vs. irs lien

If you owe back taxes to the IRS, you may have heard both terms — levy and lien — used interchangeably. But they mean very different things.

Knowing the difference between an IRS levy and an IRS lien is critical to protecting your income, property, and future.

Here’s how each works, what they allow the IRS to do, and how Summit Tax Relief helps Oklahoma clients respond.

What Is an IRS Lien?

An IRS tax lien is a legal claim the government files against your property (including real estate, vehicles, and business interests) when you owe taxes and don’t pay.

Once filed, the Notice of Federal Tax Lien (NFTL) becomes public record and can:

  • Make it hard to sell or refinance your home
  • Disrupt business transactions or credit
  • Affect title searches or insurance underwriting
The lien doesn’t take your property — but it gives the IRS a legal right to it before other creditors if you sell.

What Is an IRS Levy?

An IRS levy is when the IRS takes your property — wages, bank accounts, retirement funds, vendor payments, and more.

Levies are seizures, not just claims. You’ll often see:

  • Bank account frozen (Form 668-A)
  • Wages garnished (Form 668-W)
  • Business payments redirected to the IRS
  • Assets physically seized in rare cases
Levies are the IRS’s strongest collection tool — and often follow ignored notices like CP504, LT11, or Letter 1058.

Which Is Worse?

It depends on your situation:

  • Liens don’t take money but can hurt long-term financial options (home sales, credit, loans).
  • Levies take your money immediately, with little recourse if you miss the response window.

We take both seriously — but levies are the most urgent.
